The History

The Fairley Brothers and Lampman Building has been a cornerstone of Cripple Creek, home to various businesses over the years, including a drug store, women’s hat maker, engineer’s studio, and law office. This versatile building also housed medical offices, a mortuary, and later became a hotel. Its third floor featured a grand ballroom, hosting social events and serving as the Masonic Temple.

If these walls could talk, they’d tell tales of Cripple Creek’s colorful mix of fortune-seekers, ambitious merchants, and unsavory characters. During the building’s early years, it witnessed the violent Labor War between the mining union and Colorado Springs mine owners, sparking such unrest that the governor declared martial law, bringing in the National Guard and curtailing citizens’ rights. Yet, the town’s tough merchants found ways to endure, pushing through the political strife that erupted over work conditions.

With its history of mining accidents, fires, floods, and bloody labor disputes, it’s no wonder Cripple Creek has earned a haunted reputation. Ghost stories abound in this historic town, which once saw homicides almost daily. Some say it remains one of the most haunted places in the U.S., with spirits still lingering in its storied halls.

Who is Maggie?

The Colorado Grande Casino and Hotel is believed to be among the most haunted locations in the United States. The most notable apparition is the figure of an Irish woman wearing turn of the century garments. She has been given the name “Maggie,” often smells of roses, and has been spotted by patrons and casino team alike...but always disappears before approached. It is believed she may have been a member of the community and she seems to be relatively upbeat and pleasant despite being deceased. The ghost has appeared as both a human figure and unexplained blue light. Usually appearing on the top two floors of the building, the sounds of her high heeled shoes are often heard echoing in the halls. Described as about 25 years old and dressed in turn-of-the-century clothing, she wears a white shirtwaist, a long cotton skirt and high-heeled boots. The young beauty, with her hair piled atop her head, is known to leave behind the scent of her rose perfume even when she isn’t spotted. Some have reported that singing and dancing is sometimes heard emanating from the old ballroom, as well as Maggie’s lilting soprano voice singing an Irish accented concertina. At the casino, security guards have often reported seeing “Maggie” along with a gentleman friend playing the slot machines after hours. She has also been caught on tape by the security cameras. However, after being viewed and stowed away, the tapes mysteriously vanished.
